North Korean High School Girls Given Harsh Punishment for Playing a Word Game

crazynews
On February 5, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) published a report on the human rights situation in North Korea. The report highlights concerns over detention facilities, restrictions on free expression, and food shortages, calling on North Korea to take responsibility and implement corrective measures.

One striking case mentioned in the report took place in April 2023, when 20 high school girls were subjected to public shaming for playing a word game during a sports training camp. Authorities discovered the incident after confiscating a mobile phone that had recorded the gathering. The girls were accused of participating in an unauthorized entertainment event and failing to report the use of South Korean-style words.

As a result, they were forced to endure a public denunciation session in front of a crowd at a train station square and were sentenced to three to five years of "re-education through labor" (a form of imprisonment). The OHCHR has strongly condemned such excessive punishments and urged North Korea to address its human rights violations.

Viewer Comments:
Three to five years just for playing a word game? Seriously?
They should at least show some tolerance for kids just having fun.
If they arrest people for this, they’re going to run out of prisons.
