Tourists Fined and Banned for Jumping into Trevi Fountain

crazynews
Three tourists from New Zealand were caught by police while attempting to enter the Trevi Fountain in Rome. On the night of the 23rd, the three bypassed restricted areas and climbed onto the marble sculptures surrounding the fountain.

As they tried to walk through the water, police intervened, but a 30-year-old man broke free and jumped into the fountain. He was fined 500($520) and received a lifetime ban from visiting the Trevi Fountain.

According to the Rome police, dozens of tourists are fined each year for dipping their feet or bottles into the fountain. Additionally, about €1.5 million worth of coins are thrown into the fountain annually, attracting an increasing number of coin thieves.

In 2024, new regulations were introduced, limiting the number of visitors in front of the Trevi Fountain to 400 at a time. Visiting hours are also restricted to between 9 AM and 9 PM, and the city is considering implementing an entrance fee.

That’s a pretty hefty fine.
So, if you pay a big fine once, you get to swim in the Trevi Fountain…
I didn’t know even dipping your toes or a bottle is forbidden.
