In Espírito Santo, Brazil, a court has officially recognized a 10-year-old boy as having three fathers and one mother on his official birth records.
At birth, the boy was registered as the child of his biological father and mother. However, due to complications in his parents' marriage, he was primarily cared for by his paternal uncle and the uncle’s husband. After his parents divorced, he continued living with his uncles, receiving love and stability from them.
Once he started school, the boy wanted official recognition of all three of his fathers and decided to take legal action in 2019. His case was initially dismissed, but on the 21st of this month, a different court ruled in his favor, granting legal recognition to his uncle and his husband as his parents.
The boy’s lawyer emphasized that this ruling acknowledges diverse family structures and prioritizes emotional bonds over traditional definitions of parenthood. Adoption by same-sex couples has been legal in Brazil since 2010.
