A woman in her 40s from the United States has been sentenced to prison after sitting on the abdomen of a 10-year-old boy in her care, causing his death. The woman, who weighed 154 kg (340 pounds), had been assigned as the foster guardian of the child by a foster care agency.
According to The Sun on the 20th, 48-year-old Jennifer Lee Wilson punished Dakota Stevens, the 10-year-old boy in her care, by sitting on his abdomen because he was misbehaving.
Court documents revealed that Wilson remained seated on Stevens, who weighed only 41 kg (90 pounds), for five minutes. At some point, the boy became unresponsive, leading Wilson to check on him and ask, "Are you faking it?" When she realized he had lost consciousness, she immediately called 911, but Stevens died two days later.
A police investigation revealed that approximately 30 minutes prior to the incident, Stevens had visited a neighbor, asking to be adopted and claiming that Wilson frequently hit him in the face. The neighbor testified that they had not noticed any signs of abuse earlier that morning, but paramedics later found bruises on the boy’s neck and chest when they arrived at the scene.
During police questioning, Wilson stated, "He had been misbehaving all day and refused to help with household chores, so I decided to punish him." An autopsy determined that Stevens’ cause of death was mechanical asphyxia. A CT scan also revealed severe brain swelling due to oxygen deprivation.
The court sentenced Wilson to five years in prison, followed by one year of probation.
