A jury in California has ordered Starbucks to pay $50 million in damages to a delivery driver who suffered severe burns from a hot beverage with a loose lid.
According to a lawsuit filed in 2020, the man was injured while receiving his drink at a drive-thru in Los Angeles. He spilled the scalding beverage on his lap, causing severe burns, permanent scarring, and nerve damage, including to his genitals. The lawsuit claimed that Starbucks was negligent because the lid was not properly secured.
The man’s lawyer stated that he had received three hot drinks, but one of the lids had not been properly attached. As he received the drink, it spilled onto his lap.
The damages awarded include physical pain, emotional distress, humiliation, loss of enjoyment of life, and ongoing anxiety, according to court records.
Starbucks has announced plans to appeal the ruling. In a statement, a company spokesperson expressed sympathy for the man but disagreed with the jury’s decision, arguing that the compensation amount was excessive. Starbucks also emphasized its commitment to the highest safety standards, including the proper handling of hot beverages.
