Saiki City in Oita Prefecture, Japan’s largest flounder producer, is adopting an innovative farming method using green LED lights. This technique increases the flounders' food intake, allowing them to grow 1.6 times larger than those raised in regular tanks.
According to an emeritus professor at Kitasato University, green light is the most effective for promoting growth among the three primary colors of light. This method can shorten the farming period from the usual one year to just nine months. As a result, it reduces electricity costs and lowers the risks associated with typhoons and red tides.
Producers are optimistic that the green LED method will not only accelerate fish growth but also reduce the likelihood of disease. Saiki City has registered these green LED-grown flounders as a gift option for Japan’s hometown tax donation program and is considering expanding to international markets in the future.
