A new study suggests that extraterrestrial life might be attempting to contact Earth using fast radio bursts (FRBs) from a distant galaxy.
A research team from Northwestern University detected an FRB that emitted 21 pulses, each lasting only a few milliseconds, between February and July 2023. This FRB originated from a galaxy that existed 11.3 billion years ago and is now located 2 billion light-years away. The galaxy is estimated to have a mass 100 billion times that of the Sun.
FRBs release as much energy in a few milliseconds as the Sun does in an entire day. Scientists believe they are caused by magnetars, which are highly magnetized neutron stars. However, some theories suggest that extraterrestrial life could be responsible for these short bursts of radio waves.
Radio Astronomer Tarraneh Eftekhari commented, “This discovery shows that not all FRBs come from young stars. There may be a subgroup of FRBs linked to older star systems.”
