Free Game on Steam Discovered to Contain Malware

crazynews
The free game PirateFi, available on Steam, was discovered to contain info-stealing malware, according to an email sent by Steam to affected users.

PirateFi, developed by Seaworth Interactive, was released on February 6, 2025. Before its removal on February 12, it had been downloaded by approximately 800 to 1,500 users.

An archived version of the game’s store page describes PirateFi as a multiplayer survival game set on the sea, where players could build bases, craft weapons, and gather food.

On February 12, Steam notified users who had installed PirateFi, warning them that the game contained malware. The message stated that a compromised version of the game was uploaded via the developer’s Steam account and is suspected to contain malicious software.

Steam advised affected users to scan their systems with antivirus software, check for any unauthorized programs, and consider reinstalling their operating systems due to the possibility of malicious files being deployed on their PCs.

Viewer Comments:
I’m a bit worried since I use Steam all the time.
I wonder if Steam would offer any compensation for something like this.
I never really thought about security issue, but I guess I should be more careful now…
