NASA and ESA have announced the discovery of an asteroid named 2024 YR4, first detected on December 27, 2023, by the ATLAS telescope in Chile.
The asteroid, estimated to be 40 to 100 meters in diameter, has a 1.2% chance of colliding with Earth on December 22, 2032, though there is a 99% chance it will pass safely. It is currently about 45 million kilometers away from Earth and is moving farther away.
The asteroid is not expected to approach Earth again until 2028, but NASA continues to assess the impact risk and will consider mitigation measures if necessary.
International organizations have also begun discussions and plan to evaluate future observational data to determine the appropriate response.
As of February 9, the chance of a collision has been raised to 2.2%.
