On January 18, 2025, a fuel tanker overturned in Nigeria’s northwestern Niger State, causing a fuel leak that later exploded, resulting in over 70 deaths and 56 injuries. According to Reuters, it is believed that the explosion occurred as locals gathered to collect the spilled fuel, further exacerbating the casualties.
In Nigeria, recovering fuel at accident sites has become a common practice due to rising fuel prices. In October of last year, a similar tanker explosion in Jigawa State claimed the lives of approximately 150 people.
Frequent accidents involving fuel transport trucks are partly attributed to the country’s underdeveloped railway freight network, which has led to a heavy reliance on road transport along major highways.
