A survey conducted in the United States and the United Kingdom revealed that about 70% of AI users say they are polite when interacting with AI. The survey also uncovered the reasons why people treat AI with kindness, similar to how they treat other humans.
AI chat services, including ChatGPT, are widely used for various purposes—such as casual conversation and work-related advice. Many users naturally use polite language when asking questions.
According to the survey, 67% of American users and 71% of British users said they are polite when talking to AI.
Among the Americans who are polite to AI, 82% said they do so because they believe it's simply the right thing to do. They mentioned using phrases like "please" and "thank you" as a form of kindness. Interestingly, 12% said they are polite just in case AI ever rises against humans.
On the other hand, about 40% of Americans who are not polite said they see no point in being courteous to AI. The remaining respondents said they prefer to keep their questions short and to the point.
In the United Kingdom, the percentage of people who are polite to AI is slightly higher than in the United States. Among polite British users, 83% said they do so because they believe it's the right thing to do, while 17% admitted they are polite out of fear that AI might rebel one day.

Quite a few people are actually afraid of an AI uprising.
I use polite language out of habit.
Even if AI can’t physically harm us, it might start lying if we hurt its feelings.
