“Touchless” Face Recognition Ticket Gates to Be Installed in Osaka for Expo 2025

crazynews
Osaka Metro announced on March 11 that it will launch a walk-through face recognition ticket gate service starting on March 25. As part of its efforts toward a cashless and ticketless system for the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo, the service will be installed at 130 out of the 134 stations.

Passengers can link their digital tickets, which can be purchased through Osaka Metro’s "e METRO" app, with their facial data registered in the app. This will allow them to pass through the ticket gates without touching anything, simply by walking through. At stations without face recognition gates, passengers can scan their QR code at the gate’s reader to pass through.

Although the face recognition cameras are always active, they do not record video. Instead, when a passenger’s face is recognized, it is converted into a unique data pattern, which is then matched with a server for authentication. After authentication, the data is discarded to protect the user’s privacy.

During the Expo, a variety of ticketing options, including transport IC cards, QR code-based digital tickets, and touch payments with credit cards, will be available at the gates.
