Champagne sales are struggling worldwide as the global mood grows increasingly somber, and fewer people feel inclined to celebrate, according to a report by the Champagne Committee, an industry group representing over 16,000 wine producers.
In 2024, global shipments of champagne from France fell by approximately 10%, totaling 271 million bottles—a decline for the second consecutive year. The drop is attributed to consumer spending cuts amid rising inflation and a general sense of stagnation worldwide.
The Champagne Committee noted that these challenging circumstances reflect broader trends in the alcoholic beverage market.
Maxime Toubart, co-chair of the committee, candidly remarked, "Amid global conflicts, political gridlock, and rising economic uncertainty in major champagne markets, now is simply not a time for celebration." The primary markets affected include the United States and France.
Champagne consumption within France also saw a 7% decrease, dropping to 118 million bottles. The report highlighted that the domestic market continues to face a persistent sense of political and economic instability.

Sparkling wine is good enough for me.
If no one wants it, I’ll gladly drink it all!
For me, every day is a special occasion.
