According to a report released by the UK-based think tank Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) on February 26, 2025, more than 9 out of 10 undergraduate students in the UK are using AI in some form. This marks a significant increase from the previous survey, and experts say student behavior is changing rapidly.
The study found that the percentage of students using AI rose from 66% in 2024 to 92%, while those using generative AI for exams and assignments increased from 53% to 88%. Most students use AI for tasks such as explaining concepts, summarizing essays, and generating research ideas. Additionally, 18% of students admitted to directly incorporating AI-generated text into their work.
A HEPI manager stressed that educational institutions must rethink their assessment methods and provide more training for staff on the capabilities and limitations of AI. The survey also highlighted a digital divide, revealing that wealthier students and male students are more likely to use AI regularly.
Students cited "saving time" and "improving the quality of their work" as the main reasons for using AI. While universities are working to address the rise of AI, many students report that the rules surrounding its use remain unclear.

It’s easy to use, so of course everyone is using it.
I bet some students are using it to fake their reports.
I guess they’re true digital natives.
