Study Finds Diverse Wildlife Living in Florida’s Urban Sewers

crazynews
A study published in the journal Urban Naturalist reveals that a wide range of animals—including alligators—use urban sewer systems as travel routes in Florida. Researchers discovered approximately 35 different animal species living in the drainage system of Gainesville, an urban area in the state.

To understand how drainage systems serve as animal pathways, researchers installed 39 motion-sensor cameras inside Gainesville's drainage pipes and observed them for 60 days. The cameras recorded over 3,800 animal sightings, including common species like raccoons and opossums. Surprisingly, the team also spotted tree frogs, armadillos, alligator and 12 species of birds.

While sewer rats have been extensively studied, there is little research on other animals using drainage systems. The research team believes similar animal activity is likely happening in urban areas across Florida.

Florida has already taken steps to protect wildlife. For instance, special tunnels have been built to help endangered Florida panthers cross roads safely.

Let’s open it up as the world’s first underground zoo.
It’s like a Jungle Cruise… but in the sewers.
For the animals, it’s probably a buffet down there.
