Belgium Bans 600-Year-Old Tradition of “Drinking” Fish

crazynews
A long-standing tradition in Belgium of "drinking" fish has recently been banned, sparking considerable controversy. The practice, which has been observed for nearly 600 years, involves drinking a small fish called "gudgeon" (a type of carp) soaked in red wine from a silver cup during the annual Crackling Festival in the town of Geerardsbergen. However, the approval of a new animal welfare law has put an end to this age-old custom.

Local council member Ann Panis has called the decision a "disaster," stating, "The regulations were approved without consulting us." Currently, protests are being held in Geerardsbergen against the newly enacted law.

Mayor Fernand Van Trimpont commented, "Flanders needs to take cultural and historical factors into account. We hope our protests will be heard and that the regulation will be amended."

On the other hand, Michel Vandenbosch, president of the animal rights group GAIA, has argued that the suffering of animals cannot be justified.

Viewer Comments:
At least they should make an exception for the festival.
I don’t think this law is worth keeping if it means losing such a valuable tradition.
I don’t believe it should be something forced by law. This is truly a disaster.
