In Australia, a man waiting for a heart transplant survived 100 days with a titanium artificial heart made by Bivacor. In March 2025, he successfully received a donor heart.
Bivacor is a medical device company founded by Dr. Daniel Timms from Queensland, Australia.
The patient from New South Wales was suffering from severe heart failure. While waiting for a heart transplant, he received Bivacor’s "Total Artificial Heart (TAH)." This advanced device uses a magnetically levitated impeller spinning at 2,000 revolutions per minute to pump blood, replicating the natural blood flow of a healthy heart.
By November 2024, his condition had become critical, and doctors feared he would not survive until a suitable donor heart became available. However, after receiving the artificial heart, his health improved significantly, enabling him to live for over 100 days until a donor heart was found.
The "Total Artificial Heart" was first implanted in a patient in Texas, USA, in July 2024. Since then, four additional patients have received the device, but all underwent heart transplants within 27 days. This Australian patient is the first in the world to be discharged from the hospital while living with the artificial heart.

Wow, I hope this technology can save many patients in the future.
Looks like the day when “Iron Heart” becomes real isn’t far off.
If he lasted 100 days and his condition improved, he probably could’ve gone even longer.
